STANFORD, Calif. -- Ron Polonsky became the first from the Stanford men's swimming and diving program to earn a weekly honor from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Polonsky was named ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday after winning four events in the season-opening Triple Distance Meet against Cal on Friday at Avery Aquatic Center.
In the unique format of the meet, each swimmer competes in three distances in one stroke, and Polonsky won all three individual medley relay races.
Polonsky won the 100-yard I.M. in a personal best 49.38, the 200 I.M. in 1:47.62, and the 400 I.M. in 3:55.53. In addition, Polonsky swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:26.37).
No. 9 Stanford and No. 1 Cal split 20 races with Polonsky providing a good portion of Stanford's 10 victories.
A two-time Olympian for Israel, Polonsky reached the semifinals in two individual events in Paris this summer -- placing 12th in the 200-meter I.M. and 16th in the 100 breaststroke.
