STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2 Stanford Cardinal defeated No. 17 UC San Diego this afternoon, moving to 18-3 (3-2) on the season this afternoon, behind three goals and three assists from Jackson Painter.
The first quarter was led by Painter posting a quick hat trick, scoring three times to send the Cardinal into the first break with a 4-3 lead. On the other end, West Temkin made four saves in the cage to maintain the Stanford lead.
The Cardinal came out swinging to start the second, with Will Scheider adding his second and third goals of the day for his first career hat trick. Freshmen Ryan Ohl and Botond Balogh pitched in their first goals to make it 8-4 Card at halftime.
Stanford poured in four more goals in the third, with Balogh adding in his second of the day. Gavin West, Dash McFarland and Ethan Parrish each scored as well to make it 12-7 heading into the fourth.
After UC San Diego opened the fourth with a pair of goals, Stanford answered back in a hurry. Alex Gheorghe and Soren Jensen scored within a minute of each other to put the lead back at five goals, 14-9. Soren Jensen’ second goal of the day iced the game at 15-10.
Temkin finished the game with 10 saves, and the freshmen trio of Schneider, Balogh and Ohl combining for six goals and three assists.
The Cardinal closes out the season next week with a Friday night game against No. 7 California. The Big Splash at Avery Aquatic Center starts at 6:00 p.m. PT, and can be streamed on Overnght.
