Pregame Playlist: Soren Jensen

Before every game, match, or meet every athlete has a go-to playlist that they listen to before to get themselves ready for action. In Pregame Playlist we hear what student-athletes' playlists mean to them! Hear from Soren Jensen of Men's Water Polo, who shares his pregame playlist in advance of their game against Cal.

GoStanford.com: What’s your favorite song on this playlist and why?

Soren Jensen: My favorite song on this playlist is Already by Kodak Black. Kodak has been a constant in my pregame playlists, and this song especially fills me with confidence and gets me into the right mindset for competition.

GS: Who are your favorite artists these days?

SJ: My favorite artists tend to change, but right now, I’d say it’s between Kodak Black, Kanye West, and Mac Miller. They each bring something different, but they’re always in rotation for me.

GS: What about this playlist gets you ready for competition?

SJ: I like my pregame music to be really upbeat. Whether it’s joyful or motivating, the songs give me that extra edge and boost in confidence before getting in the pool.

GS: How would you describe your music taste in general?

SJ: I’d say my music taste is pretty diverse. My main go-to genres are rap and alternative, but I’ll also mix in some rock and country depending on my mood.

GS: Does this playlist different from what you listen to normally? If so, how come?

SJ: Typically, my playlists stick to one genre, but my pregame playlist mixes styles to hit the right vibe and energy. It’s less about any single genre and more about the feeling the songs create.

GS: Any unique stories behind what these songs meant to you or your team?

SJ: Two songs have a unique place in my heart. San Rafael Bridge was actually made by my best friend from home, and I like to boast that I’m his biggest supporter. And Dreams and Nightmares has been my game-day anthem for the last eight years—I’ve listened to it before every single game.

GS: How does your music taste compare to the rest of your team’s?

SJ: Our team mostly has a similar taste in music, though I’m one of the few who doesn’t particularly enjoy EDM or house music.

GS: Describe your relationship with music, and how/if that relates to your sport.

SJ: Music is essential for me, especially when it comes to sports. It fuels my confidence, builds up my energy, and gets me into a mental zone where I’m ready to compete. It’s a huge part of my pregame routine and something I lean on to give me that extra focus.
