BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Four Cardinal scored in double figures led by Nunu Agara’s 15 and Brooke Demetre had 14 points and seven rebounds, but No. 24 Stanford struggled in the second and third quarters in a 79-66 loss at Indiana on Sunday.

The Cardinal (4-1) started the game by making nine of its first 13 shots, but the Hoosiers were just as hot, going 9-of-14 in the opening quarter and taking a 24-22 lead after one.

Jzaniya Harriel sank a couple of free throws early in the second to pull Stanford back within two, 26-24, before Indiana went on a 14-0 run over the next 5:16 to take control. The Cardinal missed its first eight shots in the quarter and went nearly 10 minutes of game action without hitting a field goal. The run stopped with a Brooke Demetre jumper with 2:35 to go until halftime.

Stanford shot 8-of-30 over the second and third quarters (.267), but Indiana couldn’t blow it open. Stanford cut the deficit to single digits midway through the third when Brooke Demetre battled for an offensive rebound on a missed free throw, was fouled, and sank both of hers.

The Cardinal again got the deficit to 10, 67-57, on a Demetre bucket with 3:47 to go in the game, but Indiana’s Lilly Mesiter scored the next four all at the line and Shay Ciezki made a layup to put IU back up 16 with just over two minutes remaining.

Stanford made seven of its final nine shots and was 9-of-18 from the floor overall in the fourth. Chloe Clardy and Courtney Ogden added 10 apiece for the Cardinal.

Stanford returns to action at home when it hosts Morgan State on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
