STANFORD, Calif. – Continuing its winning ways on its home court, Stanford men’s basketball defeated Norfolk State, 70-63, on Wednesday at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal improves to 5-0 this season with the result.
Maxime Raynaud tallied his fifth double-double in as many games, keeping him in the national lead in the category. The senior from Paris tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds while also contributing two steals and two blocks. Jaylen Blakes tied his career-high with 18 points, including a 10-for-12 mark at the free throw line, while Oziyah Sellers added 15 points.
The Cardinal went to the free throw line 37 times, marking the program’s most since Jan. 22, 2022 against Arizona State, when it took 41 free throws. Stanford controlled the glass with 18 offensive rebounds that finished with 23 second-chance points.
Stanford jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead over Norfolk State (4-2), with Blakes scoring Stanford’s first seven points. The Cardinal’s biggest lead of 15 points came with 8:25 to go in the period after a triple from Ryan Agarwal, but the Spartans fought to pull within five at the half, 38-33.
The Spartans continued their run to start the second half, taking a 45-44 lead with 10:10 to go, but Stanford responded immediately with baskets from Raynaud and Aidan Cammann to push the lead back to multiple possessions. Sellers scored seven of Stanford’s final 10 points to help the team secure the victory.
The Cardinal hits the road for the first time this season with a trip to Santa Clara on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
