STANFORD, Calif. – Brooke Demetre tied a career high with 17 points, Mary Ashley Stevenson scored all of her 10 in the second half and Stanford used a strong finish to beat visiting Cal Poly on Monday night, 81-45.
The Cardinal (6-1) was up just eight at halftime, but kicked it into gear coming out of the break. Stanford closed the game on a 31-10 run, including a 20-1 spurt to begin the fourth quarter in winning its 10th consecutive game against Cal Poly (3-4).
Stanford entered the evening third in the country in 3-point percentage, but leaned on its speed and spacing to attack the basket and take control. The Cardinal scored 42 points in the paint and 15 at the free throw line, and had 19 assists on its 30 made buckets, primarily on cuts to the rim.
Tess Heal started her second consecutive game and scored 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting and drew six fouls. Nunu Agara added 15 and Elena Bosgana 10.
In the second half, Stanford was 18-of-31 from the floor (.581) and registered an assist on 13 of its 18 field goals. The Cardinal made 9-of-13 (.692) in the fourth quarter and hit eight in a row during an 18-0 run midway through the period.
Up eight at the break, Stanford opened the second half on an 11-0 run that was capped with a four-point play from Heal, who drained a wing 3-pointer while being hit in the side of her head.
The Cardinal closes out this three-game homestand when it hosts UC San Diego on Friday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m.
