Desert Double Dual

Three top-10 teams meet in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Stanford men’s swimmers compete in a scoring meet for the first time this season and the Cardinal divers make their season debut at a two-day double duel against Cal and Arizona State beginning Thursday.

The three-team event, which also includes a women’s meet among the same schools, includes three top-10 teams: No. 9 Stanford, No. 1 Cal, and No. 6 Arizona State -- the defending national champion.

The competition takes place at ASU’s Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Action begins Thursday at 5 p.m. PT and resumes Friday at 10 a.m. PT. There is no livestream.

Stanford has competed only once this season, in the non-scoring Triple Distance Meet against Cal at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center. The teams split 20 races, with Olympian Ron Polonsky sweeping the three individual medley distances and winning a fourth event with the 200 medley relay.

Diving for the first time for Stanford is freshman Misha Andriyuk, a platform specialist who will compete at the World Junior Championships Nov. 24-Dec. 1 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He joins Stanford's four-time All-American and two-time Pac-12 champion Jack Ryan in the double dual competition.

Stanford and Cal still will compete in their annual dual meet on January 31, but this will mark the resumption of the annual meet against Arizona State. Last year, six Avery Aquatic Center records and one Stanford record were broken in ASU’s 156-5.-115.5 victory over the Cardinal.

Stanford last beat the Sun Devils in January 21, 2022, with a 184-93 victory over the then-No. 6 team, also at Stanford.

With the exception of three seasons, Stanford and Arizona State have met annually since 1977-78. Stanford holds a 38-6 lead in duals, with the Cardinal winning 29 consecutive meetings from 1993-2022.
