PARIS - Three Stanford Artistic Swimming athletes helped bring home silver for Team USA, the country's first medal in artistic swimming in 20 years, and just its third ever. Jacklyn Luu, Audrey Kwon, and Megumi Field each featured in the three events that led the United States to the podium.
Incoming freshman Calista Liu was also a part of the team, named an alternate for the games. Stanford's head coach Megan Abarca served as an assistant coach for Team USA in Paris as well.
In the first swim of the games, the technical event, Team USA was initially given a score of 249.0067, placing the squad outside of medal contention.
A review of the swim overturned a basemark deduction however, moving Team USA's score to 282.7567 and vaulting the squad into fourth place. The United States took advantage of this momentum and never looked back.
On day two, in the free routine, Team USA took second place and scored well enough to also take second overall in the standings, with a mark of 360.2688.
The United States closed out the competition with the Acrobatic Routine. The Americans again had the second-best mark, trailing only the gold medal winners, China.
Team USA's score of 271.3166 secured the silver medal and the first podium finish in 20 years. China claimed the gold and Spain took the bronze.
The United States finished with a combined tally of 914.3421 behind China's 996.1389 and ahead of Spain's 900.7319.
Megumi Field also competed in the duet competition, taking 10th overall.
Field, Kwon, and Liu will all begin their careers on The Farm this fall as incoming freshmen.
