STANFORD, Calif. – Brooke Demetre scored a career-high 24 points, Elena Bosgana had her second consecutive double-double and Stanford ended a three-game losing streak with an 89-84 win over Florida State on Thursday night.
The victory was Stanford’s first in the ACC and moved the Cardinal (9-6, 1-3) to a perfect 9-0 at home this season. Stanford picked up its first Quad 1 win of the season in snapping the Seminoles’ five-game winning streak.
The Cardinal grew a lead as large as 17 late in the second quarter on a Mary Ashley Stevenson layup to make it 44-27, but would have to hold on in the second half. Florida State (13-3, 3-1) ended the first on a 10-0 run, which grew to 13-0 when Ta’Niya Latson made a 3-pointer to open the third quarter.
The Seminoles twice cut the deficit to one late in the third quarter, but each time Stanford answered. Raiane Dos Santos hit a triple for FSU to make it 59-58 Stanford with about two minutes to go, but Bosgana grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back on the Cardinal’s next trip down. Sydney Bowles made a layup to again cut it to one before Demetre drilled a 3-pointer with 1:10 on the clock to make it 64-60 Stanford.
Florida State got within two points in the fourth quarter, but no closer. Shay Ijiwoye made a driving layup on the left side of the hoop, finishing with her inside hand with less than five minutes to go in the game to make it 77-73 Stanford. Ijiwoye, making her second consecutive start, had a career-high seven points, five rebounds and two assists in 26 minutes.
Demetre was huge for the Cardinal in the second half, scoring 17 of her game-high 24. She was 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from deep in the third and fourth quarters.
Bosgana had her double-double in the first half (14 points, 11 rebounds) and finished with 21 points and career-highs with 15 boards and six assists. Nunu Agara added 17 points and nine rebounds.
Tess Heal matched her Stanford best with 14 points and was 2-of-3 from deep. The junior transfer is shooting 53.6 percent (15-of-28) on 3-pointers this season.
Another transfer, Stevenson came off the bench and scored four points with four rebounds in 16 minutes. Her layup through contact from Mariana Valenzuela midway through the fourth quarter gave Stanford its largest lead of the final period, 75-66. The Cardinal led for 36:09 and the only lead change was early, on a Demetre 3-pointer to make it 8-7 with less than four minutes gone in the game.
Stanford returns to the floor at noon on Sunday when it hosts No. 21 NC State in a game televised on ESPN.
