STANFORD, Calif. -- The Stanford men’s swimming and diving teams are in action at two locations this weekend, but will combine for team totals for the annual dual meet against USC, which takes place Saturday at noon at Avery Aquatic Center.
The meet signifies Stanford’s first swimming competition since November 23, and marks the final home meet of the season. Therefore, Stanford’s 11 seniors and graduate students will be honored in a brief recognition ceremony afterward. Those individuals are: Ethan Dang, Matt Fenlon, Hunter Hollenbeck, Gabe Machado, Rick Mihm, Andrei Minakov, Ron Polonsky, Jack Ryan, Aaron Sequeira, Avery Voss, and Hayden Zheng.
Stanford’s divers – Hollenback, Ryan, and freshman Misha Andriyuk – are competing at the Cal Diving Invitational from Thursday through Saturday at Berkeley’s Spieker Aquatics Complex. With USC’s divers there as well, diving results during the prelims on Thursday and Friday will count toward the Stanford-USC dual-meet team score.
On Thursday, Stanford’s Jack Ryan had the top 1-meter prelim score, but USC took the next four places to lead Stanford, 10-9. Friday’s 3-meter prelims also count toward the overall Stanford-USC dual score.
Stanford and USC are longtime rivals. Last year, Jonathan Tan anchored Stanford to victory in the 200-yard medley relay to open the dual and the Cardinal never trailed on the way to a 175.5-119.5 victory in Los Angeles. Stanford’s sixth-year Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Dan Schemmel is 4-0 against USC. Stanford has a six-year winning streak in the dual matchup against the Trojans.
The programs first met on April 8, 1927, when Stanford beat USC, 51-8, at Encina Pool. Stanford placed first and second in all but one race.
This year, No. 8 Stanford is 0-2 in duals, though it won the four-team SMU Invitational in the fall. No. 16 USC, coached by Stanford great Lea Maurer, is 2-0 going into its Friday dual at No. 5 Cal.
The meet will be held concurrently with the Stanford-USC women’s dual. In each event, the women will race first, followed by the men.
Here is the event schedule: 200-yard medley relay, 1,000 freestyle, 200 free, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 50 free (followed by 15-minute break), 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 500 free, 100 fly (followed by 10-minute break), 400 individual medley, 400 free relay.
The meet features five Olympians: Andrei Minakov (Russian Olympic Committee), Ron Polonsky (Israel), and Jonathan Tan (Singapore) for Stanford, and Krzysztof Chmielewski (Poland) and Michael Chmielewski (Poland) for USC.
Stanford divers have had success so far this season. At the USA Diving Winter Nationals, Jack Ryan won the 3-meter, 1-meter, and 3-meter synchronized events in Bloomington, Indiana. In the 3-meter, he scored 852.40 points. Also, Misha Andriyuk took 10th in the platform and ninth in the platform synchronized event at the World Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
