STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford won 13 of 16 events to earn a commanding 202-97 men’s swimming and diving victory over USC at Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday.
The No. 8 Cardinal (1-2) was able to earn enough points through seven events to earn the victory over the No. 16 Trojans (2-1) and extend their win streak in their annual series to seven. Stanford’s sixth-year Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Dan Schemmel is 5-0 against USC.
Andrei Minakov was a quadruple winner and capped the day among those honored on Senior Day. Minakov captured the 200-yard butterfly (1:40.30), 100 freestyle (42.00), and was part of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.
The Cardinal charged to a fast start by winning the opening race – the 200 medley relay – in an NCAA ‘A’ cut time. The team of Aaron Sequeira, Ron Polonsky, Minakov, and Rafael Gu clocked 1:23.58.
That was the only ‘A’ time for Stanford, but there were 31 ‘B’ times. Among them, four were also personal bests. Those came from Finn Harland in the 100 backstroke (46.66), Abram Mueller in the 100 breaststroke (52.72), Josh Zuchowski in the 200 fly (1:43.97), and Go Nagaoka in the 200 breast (1:54.60).
Mueller’s 52.72 placed him No. 13 in Stanford history in the 100 breast and Gabe Machado moved to No. 14 at Stanford all-time with his 8:58.90 that placed him second in the 1,000 free to teammate Liam Custer (8:55.98).
Polonsky was a triple winner, winning the 100 breast (51.37) and 200 breast (1:53.87) along with his part on the 200 medley relay.
Stanford’s 11 seniors and graduate students honored in a brief recognition ceremony afterward were Ethan Dang, Matt Fenlon, Hunter Hollenbeck, Machado, Rick Mihm, Minakov, Polonsky, Jack Ryan, Sequeira, Avery Voss, and Hayden Zheng.
The programs first met on April 8, 1927, when Stanford beat USC, 51-8, at Encina Pool. Stanford placed first and second in all but one race.
Next is Stanford’s final dual of the season – the annual Big Splash against Cal. This will be January 31 in Berkeley at 1 p.m.
