STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman EJ Parco's late-match heroics helped lead No. 17 Stanford to its first dual win over Arizona State since 2019, defeating the Sun Devils 24-18, Sunday, in front of more than 800 fans in Maples Pavilion.
In the final bout of the afternoon, Parco faced No. 18 Jesse Vasquez at 149 pounds with the Cardinal leading the team score 21-18. Trailing Vasquez 1-0 going into the third period, Parco chose down. After registering an escape to tie the score, Parco scored a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining to pull of the upset and secure the dual win for Stanford. The rookie is now 7-3 on the season and 2-1 in duals.
Stanford (6-2) won six of the 10 bouts, spotting Arizona State (4-4) six points with a forfeit at 125 pounds. The Cardinal recorded bonus-point victories in four of its six wins to hold off the Sun Devils.
No. 29 Grigor Cholakyan, another true freshman, set the tone for the dual with a 13-3 major decision over Michael Kilic at 157 pounds. The Burbank native improves to 12-6 overall and 6-2 in duals.
Redshirt freshman Lorenzo Norman, ranked fourth nationally at 174 pounds, was dominant in a 17-2 technical fall in 6:08 against Javani Majoor. It was the eight straight win for Norman, who is now 17-1 overall and 8-0 in duals.
No. 24 Nick Stemmet defeated Jacobe Meissner, 2-0, at 197 pounds to give Stanford a 12-8 lead in the team score. The fifth year scored an escape in the second period and then rode Meissner out in the third to improve to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in duals this season.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Knox, ranked No. 8 at 133 pounds, turned in an 8-0 major decision over No. 23 Julian Chlebove in the only bout between ranked opponents. Knox has won nine consecutive matches and stands at 17-2 overall and 8-0 in duals.
Fifth year Jason Miranda added to Stanford's lead with a 16-0 technical fall in 6:28 over Daniel Miranda at 141 pounds to set up Parco's finale performance. It was the 11th win by bonus points this season for the fifth year, who is 12-3 overall.
Stanford will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 26 as it hosts Virginia for its first ACC home dual at 3 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.
