STANFORD, Calif. – No. 3 Stanford beat Ole Miss 4-2 on Saturday to advance out of ITA Kickoff Weekend and earn a spot at the ITA Indoor Nationals in February.
For the first time since last April, the Cardinal (3-0) dropped the doubles point but recovered to win the match. Ole Miss (4-1) gained the early advantage thanks to doubles victories on courts No. 1 and 3.
Trailing 1-0, Stanford rattled off four singles wins to secure the contest.
The Cardinal’s top three took care of business in straight sets – Connie Ma at No. 1 (6-0, 6-0), Valerie Glozan at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3) and Katherine Hui at No. 3 (6-3, 6-4). Hui was making her singles debut this season after battling a wrist injury.
The clincher came from Stanford’s newest member, junior transfer Caroline Driscoll, who was cleared to play earlier this week. Driscoll, who won at No. 5 yesterday, slid down to No. 6 with Hui’s insertion into the lineup, won the first set 7-5, dropped the second 4-6, then dominated in the third, 6-1.
Stanford, which has won 116 of its last 123 matches on The Farm, secured its fourth straight ITA Indoors appearance and will be chasing its first tournament title at the event since 2011.
