Five different Cardinal gymnasts earn event titles to lead Stanford to third win over Cal this season

STANFORD, Calif. - Five different Cardinal gymnasts earned event titles in Sunday afternoon's meet, as No. 2 Stanford knocked off No. 8 California, 316.250-309.150, for its third win over the Golden Bears this season.

Kicking things off on the floor, freshman Cooper Kim paced the field with a career-best 14.150 to earn his first collegiate event title. Kai Uemura turned in a 13.250 in his first collegiate routine to finish third on the floor.

Ian Lasic-Ellis and Arun Chhetri turned in their best performances of the season on pommel horse to finish second and third, scoring 13.850 and 13.550, respectively. California's Aidan Li won the event with a 14.650.

On still rings, Mark Berlaga won his first event title of the season with a 13.750 routine. Berlaga had the highest score among collegiate competitors at the Stanford Open last weekend but was bested by Team USA representative Asher Hong. Freshman Marcus Pietarinen turned in his best rings performance of his young career with a second-place 13.300, while Xander Hong made his collegiate debut with a 12.700 score.

Kiran Mandava became the second Stanford freshman to top the podium on the afternoon with a 13.900 on vault in his first meet in the Cardinal and White. Kim posted a 13.600 to finish fifth in the event, narrowly missing out on a new personal best.

Heading to the fifth rotation, Brandon Nguyen continued his dominance on parallel bars with a 14.100 score. His performance resulted in a fourth event title and third parallel bars crown this season for the captain. Chhetri also impressed with a season-best 13.750 to finish second.

Stanford finished the meet with a sweep on high bar, as Ian Lasic-Ellis posted the top score of 13.300. Uemura finished just behind with a 13.200, while Kim rounded out the podium with a 12.950.

Stanford returns to action next weekend, hitting the road for a tri-meet against No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 15 Simpson on February 8 in Norman, Oklahoma.
