Men’s Tennis Blanks UC Irvine

Stanford opened its new facility in shutout fashion

STANFORD, Calif. – Serving for the first time at the Taube Pavilion at Arrillaga Tennis Center, No. 6 Stanford men’s tennis swept No. 36 UC Irvine, 4-0. The Cardinal improves to 8-2 this season and 2-0 on Stanford’s campus.

The final match before ACC play begins, Stanford got out to a fast start with wins on courts two and three in doubles. Nico Godsick and Henry von der Schulenburg opened with a 6-1 victory in the third position while Samir Banerjee and Nathan Barki scored a 6-3 result on court two to give Stanford a 1-0 lead in the match.

In front of a capacity crowd at the new facility, Stanford won five first sets in singles play. von der Schulenburg doubled the Cardinal lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court four, while Kyle Kang extended the margin to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph on court three. Godsick netted the clincher on court five, 7-5, 6-2 – his second clinching point this season.

Stanford opens conference action on Tobacco Road, starting with a Feb. 27 tilt at No. 1 Wake Forest. A rematch of last year’s NCAA Super Regional in Winston-Salem, the first serves are set for 1 p.m. PT.
