The Cardinal bested No. 11 Arizona State and No. 12 Hawai'i 5-0

HONOLULU – No. 5 Stanford finished its trip to Hawaii with two victories, sweeping both No. 12 Hawai’i and No. 11 Arizona State Saturday on Queen’s Beach.

The Cardinal ended its time in Honolulu with a 3-3 record, including wins over No. 1, No. 11 and No. 12 in the preseason AVCA Beach Volleyball rankings.

Stanford kicked off Saturday’s action with a 5-0 victory over host Hawai’i, the program’s first sweep of the season. Redshirt junior Emma Morris and sophomore Ashley Vincent secured the first point of the match with the pair’s first win of the year, topping Kristen Serrano and Sophie Buschmann in straight sets on court five, 21-19, 21-10. Sophomores Brooke Rockwell and Ruby Sorra captured the match’s second point with a 21-18, 21-19 win on court one, while junior Kelly Belardi and freshman Avery Jackson won the dual with a 21-12, 21-18 victory on court three. Pushed to three sets on courts two and four, the Cardinal pairs came out on top in both battles, as senior Taylor Wilson and freshman Charlotta Bell topped Hawai’i’s Julia Lawrenz and Sydney Amiatu 16-21, 21-15, 15-11, while sophomore Chloe Hoffman and Clara Stowell held off the Rainbow Wahine’s comeback attempt with a 21-14, 17-21, 18-16 win.

The Cardinal continued its momentum from its match with Hawai’i against the Sun Devils, sweeping its former Pac-12 foe in straight sets on all five courts. Belardi and Jackson won their fifth match of the season, topping ASU’s Tori Clement and Arden Besecker 21-13, 21-11 to put the match at 1-0. Sorra and Rockwell defeated the Sun Devils’ top pair of Ava Williamson and Daniella Kensinger 21-16, 21-14 for the match’s second point while Morris and Vincent clinched the victory with a 21-10, 21-14 on court five.

Stanford returns to the lower 48 to host its first home duals of the season, welcoming Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, Pacific and Santa Clara to The Farm for the annual Battle of the Bay tournament Feb. 28-March 1. The Cardinal battles the Hornets and Gaels on Friday, Feb. 28, and takes on the Tigers and Broncos Saturday, March 1.
