Cardinal loses at Virginia, 89-69

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Courtney Ogden had 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but Virginia jumped on the Cardinal early and Stanford lost in Charlottesville on Sunday night, 89-69.

The Cavaliers (14-14, 6-10) started by scoring the game’s first eight points and opened on a 19-3 run. Stanford (14-13, 6-10) missed its first seven shots and its lone field goal in the first six and a half minutes was a layup from Ogden midway through the first quarter. Virginia led 25-9 after one.

The Cardinal cut the deficit to 14 at halftime (40-26) and was down 11 when Brooke Demetre made a 3-pointer to begin the second half, but Virginia answered with an 11-0 run to go up 22 and didn’t lead by less than 20 the rest of the way.

The Cavaliers shot 49.3 percent as a team and made 14-of-30 3-pointers (.467), the second-most makes in program history. Kymora Johnson led Virginia with 33 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists.

For Stanford, Ogden had career highs in both points and assists, Demetre scored 15 and Elena Bosgana had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Stanford, which had won three straight before Sunday's loss, closes out its regular-season schedule at home next weekend, hosting Miami on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Georgia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
