Cardinal Wins Eighth Straight

Stanford is 8-0 to start the year for the first time since a 10-0 start in 2018

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford (8-0) scored two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the eighth to secure a 7-3 victory and a four-game series sweep over Washington (2-6) on Monday to run its season-opening win streak to eight games.

Senior Trevor Haskins, who was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday, homered for the fourth straight game. His two-run shot in the eighth inning answered a three-run top of the eighth from Washington.

Haskins finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Freshman Rintaro Sasaki batted 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He narrowly missed hitting his first home run of the season – lacing a single off the top of the wall in right field for an RBI in the second inning.

The Cardinal jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on run-scoring singles from Jimmy Nati and Brady Reynolds before Brandon Larson lined a sac fly to left field to score the first of two runs in the second.

Leading 4-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth, Sasaki added a fifth run with an RBI-single into center field.

Washington managed to score three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Casen Taggart, but Stanford quickly regained the momentum on Haskins’ round-tripper.

Freshman Parker Warner looked good in his second career start, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings before leaving with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth. Sophomore Ben Reimers inherited the jam, but induced an inning-ending double play to keep Washington off the board.

Reimers pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out one, and was eventually credited with the victory to move to 1-0 on the season. Sam Garewal was the third Cardinal pitcher used on Monday, logging two innings with four strikeouts before handing the ball to Toran O’Harran. The junior right-hander got the final six outs, including three via the strikeout, to complete the sweep of Washington.

Stanford will remain home this week, hosting Xavier in a four-game series beginning Friday at 2:05 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday before concluding the series with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
