STANFORD, Calif. – On a back-and-forth evening marked by 17 lead changes and 12 ties, Stanford men’s basketball was topped late by Wake Forest, 79-73, at Maples Pavilion. Stanford moves to 15-8 this season and remains in sixth place in the ACC at 7-5.
Maxime Raynaud led four players in double figures, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his nation-leading 19th double-double of the season. Raynaud moved within one double-double of tying Adam Keefe (1991-92) for the program’s single-season record. Raynaud also matched his career-high with a game-leading six assists.
Chisom Okpara matched his Stanford high with 14 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Ryan Agarwal scored 12 points and Oziyah Sellers had 10. Jaylen Thompson, who earned his first-career start, and Anthony Batson, Jr. tallied new career-highs of seven and six points, respectively.
Thompson scored all seven of his points in the first 5:27 of action, helping the Cardinal to an early three-point edge, 14-11. Wake Forest (17-6, 9-3 ACC) responded with a run and led by as many as nine in the opening period, 35-26, with 4:18 to play. Stanford closed the half on an 11-5 run, and it trailed at the break, 40-37.
The lead changed hands eight times in the second half, with neither team leading by more than two possessions. The Cardinal regained the lead, 48-47, after an and-one from Raynaud, and Stanford led by as many as three points twice, the latest at 65-62 with six minutes to go. The Cardinal had good looks to even the score after Wake Forest took a late lead, but the shots did not fall and the Demon Deacons finished with the result.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Maples Pavilion against NC State. The 4 p.m. tip will air on ACC Network.
