WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 6 Stanford men’s tennis gave a scare to No. 1 Wake Forest in the ACC opener for both teams, but the host Demon Deacons survived for the win, 4-2. Stanford drops to 8-3 this season and 0-1 in the ACC.
Stanford dropped the doubles point, falling in a tiebreaker after splitting the opening two matches. Samir Banerjee and Alex Razeghi defeated the ITA’s No. 3 pair on court two, 6-3, but Wake Forest posted a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker on court three to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Wake Forest extended its lead to 2-0 on court one, but Stanford responded with a win on court three from Henry von der Schulenburg. Winning in straight sets, von der Schulenburg posted his team-leading 10th singles win of the year, 6-3, 6-3. Wake Forest pushed the lead to 3-1, but Max Basing again pulled Stanford within one with a win on court two. Basing came from behind for a ranked win in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Stanford pushed the Demon Deacons to the brink in the third sets on courts four and five, with Hudson Rivera leading 5-1 in the third in an unfinished match and Kyle Kang going point for point at 5-5. Wake Forest got a break on court four, and picked up the win and the match.
