STANFORD, Calif. – No. 5 Stanford kicked off the Battle of the Bay tournament with two dominant sweeps Friday, topping both Sacramento State and Saint Mary’s to open its 2025 home scheduling.
No. 5 Stanford started the day with a 5-0 sweep victory over Sacramento State. Flight one saw the twos pair of junior Kelly Belardi and freshman Babi Gubbins best the Hornets 21-15, 21-15 and redshirt junior Emma Morris and junior Daria Gusarova top Sac State’s Guevara/Marthaler 21-15, 21-18. Kicking off the second flight strong, fifth-year Emmy Sharp and freshman Indigo Clarke clinched the match victory with a 21-7, 21-10 dominant finish on court five. Sophomores Chloe Hoffman and Clara Stowell posted a 21-14, 21-11 win on court three to bring the match to 4-0, and freshmen Logan Tusher and Charlotta Bell finished the sweep with a 21-19, 19-21, 15-13 win on court one.
The Cardinal finished its first day of action at the Battle of the Bay tournament with another sweep, topping Saint Mary’s in straight sets 5-0. Senior Taylor Wilson and Bell captured the match's first point with a 21-14, 21-12 win on court two, while Morris and Gusarova moved the score to 2-0 with a 21-15, 20-15 victory on court four. Stanford’s threes pair of Sharp and junior Ashley Vincent earned the clinching victory with a 21-10, 21-13 win over SMC’s Nicholls/Travis. Belardi and freshman Avery Jackson pushed the match’s score to 4-0 with a 21-18, 21-9 victory on court four and sophomores Brooke Rockwell and Ruby Sorra completed the sweep with a 21-18, 21-18 win on court one.
Stanford returns to action tomorrow at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium, taking on Pacific at 10 a.m. and Santa Clara at 2 p.m. Both matches can be streamed on B1G+ while live results can be found on StanfordStats.com.
