Stanford Falls to No. 7 Nittany Lions

Four Cardinal gymnasts earn individual event titles in Saturday's meet.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - No. 2 Stanford had four individual event winners but it was not enough for the victory, as the Cardinal suffered a 321.350-314.450 upset loss to No. 7 Penn State on Saturday afternoon.

Asher Hong was the Cardinal's leading performer in the meet, scoring a 14.4000 to secure the still rings crown and a 14.050 to earn a share of the parallel bars title. The routines earned Hong his sixth and team-leading seventh event title of the season, with his parallel bars routine being his first on that apparatus so far this year.

Joining Hong at the top of the parallel bars field was Brandon Nguyen, who recorded his fifth 14+ routine of the season to make it five parallel bars event titles this season. Nguyen also added a 13.950 on vault to finish fifth.

Kaien J-Spencer posted a season-best 13.800 routine on floor exercise to earn the first event title of his collegiate career, while Arun Chhetri added a pommel horse title with a 13.750 effort.

Other notable performances included a 13.450 high bar routine to finish third, and a fourth-place 13.950 performance from David Shamah on parallel bars.

Stanford will now return home for the final two competitions of the regular season, competing next at the Stanford International Collegiate on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. PT.
