FEDERAL Way, Wash. – Two races, two school records.

Stanford opened the four-day NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday by breaking school records and earning two top-10 finishes in two relay events at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal placed fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:06.69 after opening with a ninth-place finish in the 200 medley relay, clocking 1:22.23. The Cardinal sits seventh with 46 points.

The 800 free relay team was comprised of Andrei Minakov, Henry McFadden, Ron Polonsky, and Andres Dupont Cabrera. Stanford was seventh through the first two legs despite a 1:30.94 split from McFadden, but truly can thank Dupont Cabrera for his gutty 1:31.28 anchor leg that moved them up a spot to fifth.

The time broke Stanford’s 2022 school record of 6:06.83 by Minakov, Luke Maurer, Polonsky, and Preston Forst.

The 200 medley relay team was comprised of Aaron Sequeira, Polonsky, Minakov, and Kaihan Gu. The Cardinal won the second of three heats to place ninth overall, sparked by Sequeira, who led off with a personal record 21.14 for the 50 backstroke. The team’s overall time broke the 2022 record of 1:22.41 by Leon MacAlister, Polonsky, Minakov, and Jonny Affeld.

With two more All-America honors each, Minakov now has 21 and Polonsky 19. For the 800 free relay, Stanford earned its highest finish since placing third in 2022.
