Cardinal Dispatches Canes

No. 28 Stanford wins at No. 69 Miami, 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 28 Stanford resumed its 12-day, east coast road swing with a 4-3 victory at No. 69 Miami on Friday afternoon.

Chidimma Okpara delivered the clincher, her third of the season, with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5.

The Cardinal won doubles with wins from Valerie Glozman and Connie Ma at No. 1 and Caroline Driscoll and Valencia Xu at No. 2, but Miami would respond and go up 2-1 with singles wins at Nos. 3 and 1. Xu, who has been battling an injury all trip, was forced to retire after her first set at No. 3 and Glozman dropped just her third match this spring to No. 63 Alexa Noel on the top court.

Stanford evened things up with a 6-3, 6-0 victory from Driscoll at No. 4 and Connie Ma would control the momentum for the Cardinal by winning her first-set tiebreak at No. 2. Ma was serving up 6-4 but had back-to-back double faults to allow Jaquelyn Ogunwale back in it. The senior captain remained unfazed, took the next two points to win the breaker and then rolled in the second, 6-0.

Stanford closes out its long trip at No. 65 Florida State on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
