BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 13 Cardinal rallied in the seventh, but fell 8-7 at No. 16 Virginia Tech this afternoon. Stanford falls to 24-5 on the season and 8-3 in ACC play.
Virginia Tech opened up the scoring, plating three in the bottom of the first to go ahead early.
The Cardinal answered in the top of the fourth, with a solo homer from River Mahler to put Stanford on the board. Mahler’s sixth home run of the season made it a 3-1 game.
In the next inning, the Card took the lead with a two-out rally. Kylie Chung singled to drive in two runs and tie it at 3-3. Just two pitches later, Taryn Kern crushed her 10th home run of the season to score Chung and give Stanford a 5-3 lead.
Kern’s homer was her third in as many games, extending her team-leading total.
The Hokies answered with five runs in the sixth to retake the lead at 8-5 heading into the final frame.
Camryn Carmouche doubled in the top of the seventh to bring in two runs and cut the lead to 8-7, but the Cardinal was unable to bring her in from second to tie the game.
Stanford wraps up the seven-game road trip tomorrow with game three from Virginia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. PT, and the game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
