Cardinal Drops Game Three to No. 16 Virginia Tech

Hokies walk off with seventh-inning home run

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 13 Cardinal fell 6-5 at No. 16 Virginia Tech today, moving to 24-6 (8-3) on the season. The game featured four lead changes, with the Hokies walking off on a solo home run in the seventh.

Stanford struck quickly, going ahead in the top of the first inning. After Emily Jones walked and took second on a wild pitch, Joie Economides drove her in with a single to left.

Alyssa Houston, starting in the circle, followed it up with a shutdown inning in the bottom of the first.

Jones came around to score again in the top of the third, racing home on a wild pitch to double the lead.

The Hokies answered in the fourth, scoring four to take the lead, but the Card was able to respond immediately in the top of the fifth.

Jones came home to score from third on a wild pitch for the second time in the game, then Kyra Chan singled in a run to make it a 5-4 Cardinal lead.

The Hokies responded again, leading off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to tie the game at five.

In the bottom of the seventh, Virginia Tech walked off with a solo home run to cap the game.

The Cardinal concludes the seven-game road trip with a 4-3 record, ending the month of March at 12-3 Next up is a home game against Saint Mary’s on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PT from Stanford Stadium.
