STANFORD, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford hosted some of the world's best in front of a packed Burnham Pavilion on Saturday night, defeating No. 10 California, 325.100-313.300, in the collegiate portion of the Stanford International Collegiate.
The Cardinal finished second overall in the meet, coming in behind Team USA's score of 332.750. Switzerland came in third in the event with a 315.400, followed by Finland (311.300) and International All-Stars (296.850).
Khoi Young was quite impressive in his return to the Cardinal lineup, posting a 14.900 on pommel horse to become the lone event winner in a Stanford uniform. The routine was the first appearance of the season for the reigning NCAA all-around champion.
Brandon Nguyen led the Cardinal with a pair of podium finishes, posting his sixth 14-plus parallel bars routine (14.050) and a 13.550 on high bar to earn bronze medals in both events.
Kaien J-Spencer enjoyed himself a career night, posting new lifetime bests on floor exercise (14.150) and pommel horse (14.250) to finish second and fifth in those respective events.
Jeremy Bischoff posted three new season-best scores of his own in his first appearance in Burnham this season, highlighted by a third-place finish on parallel bars with a 14.000. The fifth year also placed fifth on floor exercise (13.800) and eighth on vault (13.650) and high bar (13.200).
Ian Lasic-Ellis rounded out Stanford's podium finishers with a third-place effort on high bar (13.550), while other notable performances included career-best vault routines from freshman Wade Nelson (13.900) and Cooper Kim (13.700) to finish fourth and sixth, respectively.
Stanford was also well represented on Team USA, as current and former Cardinal fielded a full lineup for the Stars and Stripes. Asher Hong won three event titles under the United States banner, pacing the field in the all-around, as well as floor exercise and still rings.
Newly named National Team members Taylor Burkhart and Colt Walker also won events for Team USA, with Burkhart earning both the vault and high bar titles and Walker winning the parallel bars crown.
Marcus Pietarinen finished fifth in the all-around race while donning his native Finland colors, Toma Murakawa's sixth-place vault routine highlighted his night representing Japan on the International All-Stars squad.
Stanford concludes its regular season by celebrating Senior Day on March 15, once again taking on the Cal Golden Bears at 4 p.m. PT.
