Stanford Splits Day One of MPSF Mid-Season Rumble

No. 5 Cardinal tops Oregon 5-0, falls to No. 1 UCLA 4-1

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 5 Stanford split its first day of action hosting the MPSF Mid-Season Rumble Friday, topping Oregon 5-0 while falling to No. 1 UCLA 4-1. 

Stanford opened its time at the MPSF Midseason Rumble with its seventh consecutive 5-0 sweep, this time of conference foe Oregon. Sophomores Chloe Hoffman and Clara Stowell captured the first point of the dual with a 21-14, 21-12 victory on court four, while freshman Charlotta Bell and senior Taylor Wilson pushed the score to 2-0 with a 21-18, 21-17 win on court two. Junior Kelly Belardi and freshman Avery Jackson won the match with a 21-11, 21-13 decision on court three. Sophomores Brooke Rockwell and Ruby Sorra put the score at a 4-0 advantage for the Cardinal with a 21-14, 21-12 decisive win on court one, and junior Daria Gusarova and fifth-year Emmy Sharp secured the sweep with a 21-8, 26-24 victory on court five. 

Against No. 1 UCLA, Stanford's winning streak came to an end. The Bruins took the first two points with a 21-16, 21-12 win on court two and a hard-fought 28-26, 21-17 victory on court four. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Stanford battled to stay in the match, pushing courts one and three to tight first sets. However, UCLA’s top pair of Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd proved too strong, clinching the match with a 21-18, 21-13 win on court one. Stanford’s lone point came from Gusarova and Sharp, who fended off a late UCLA rally to earn a 21-18, 15-21, 15-12 win on court five.

Stanford takes on No. 3 USC and No. 9 California in its final two matchups of the MPSF Mid-Season Rumble Saturday, March 8. Matches are set for 2 and 6 p.m. at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium. Admission is free, while the duals will be streamed on B1G+.
