STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 19 Cardinal opened the home ACC slate with a 4-3 win over Syracuse tonight, moving to 15-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Stanford struck for four runs in the bottom of the second, thanks to RBI triples from Joie Economides and Taryn Kern in the inning.
The Cardinal bats got going in the bottom of the second, after Kyra Chan reached on a leadoff error. Chan came around to score on a triple from Economides, who then crossed home on an RBI single from Caelan Koch. Koch would score on the second triple of the inning, when Kern drove a ball off the right field wall.
Emily Jones brought Kern home on an RBI single, which also extended her hitting streak to seven-straight games, and made it a 4-0 Stanford lead.
Syracuse scored two in the fifth, snapping four innings of no-hit work from Kylie Chung. The two-run inning also ended Chung’s consecutive scoreless inning streak at 12, putting the score at 4-2.
Chung ended the night with 4.2 innings pitched, allowing just two runs on three hits.
Freshman Zoe Prystajko was sharp in relief, tossing 2.1 non-consecutive innings to pick up her first career save. Prystajko entered in the fifth with two runners in scoring position, but got out of the jam with a strikeout.
Prystajko struck out two more in a scoreless sixth, before exiting the circle to start the seventh. The Huntington Beach, Calif. product re-entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh, looking to secure the win. After a strikeout, Prystajko walked in a run but followed it with a pair of flyouts to wrap the 4-3 win.
