Garvin Etches Name in History

Stanford finishes fifth as a team at the ACC Championships

DURHAM, N.C. - Hunter Garvin became the program's first individual ACC champion, highlighting No. 18 Stanford's fifth-place finish at the conference tournament on Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Virginia Tech (91.5) won its first ACC team title since 2018. Pittsburgh (63.5) was the runner-up followed by NC State (62.5) and North Carolina (45.5). Stanford finished half a point behind the Tar Heels for fifth, while Virginia (38.5) was sixth and host Duke took seventh (1.5).

The No. 1 seed at 165 pounds, Garvin received a bye into the semifinals where he dominated No. 5 seed Mac Church of Virginia Tech, 11-1. In the finals, Garvin registered a 5-1 decision over No. 2 seed Nick Hamilton of Virginia. The redshirt sophomore is now 19-6 on the season and has won a team-best 12 consecutive matches. It marks the 50th individual conference title by a Stanford wrestler all-time.

Nick Stemmet finished as the runner-up at 197 pounds to punch his ticket to his fourth NCAA Championships. The fifth year fell to top-seeded Mac Stout of Pittsburgh in the finals after posting a 22-5 (3:21) technical fall over Duke's Kwasi Bonsu in the quarterfinals and a 12-4 major decision against No. 3 seed Andy Smith of Virginia Tech in the semifinals. Stemmet's win over Smith, his second of the season, was the 100th of his Cardinal career. Now 21-9 on the season, he is just the 11th wrestler in school history to reach the 100-win mark.

Joining Garvin and Stemmet as NCAA automatic qualifiers are fifth years Jason Miranda and Peter Ming - both advancing to the national tournament for the first time in their careers.

Miranda, the No. 3 seed at 141 pounds, fell in the quarterfinals to Briar Priest of Pitt, but battled back through the consolation brackt to finish on the podium. A 4-1 sudden victory decision over (5) Jayden Scott of North Carolina put him in the consolation finals against Priest. Miranda avenged his opening-round loss with a 6-3 decision over the No. 6 seed to improve to 21-7 on the season.

With five NCAA bids at heavyweight, Ming's 10-4 decision over (6) Connor Barket of Duke in the consolation semifinals secured his spot in the national tournament.

Stanford will close out the 2024-25 campaign at the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, March 20-22. NCAA at-large berths will be announced on Tuesday, while the seeds and brackets for the national tournament will be revealed on Wednesday.
