STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 19 Cardinal moved to 16-3 on the season today, topping Syracuse 5-1. Alyssa Houston and Kylie Chung struck out eight while allowing just two hits, clinching a second series win to open ACC play with a 4-2 conference record. The win also extended the Cardinal’s perfect start to the year at home, with the team improving to 11-0 at Stanford Stadium.
The Card struck first, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. Emily Jones brought in two with an RBI single, after Taryn Kern brought home the game’s first run on a bases loaded hit by pitch.
In the third, Stanford added another thanks to a solo home run from Joie Economides. The blast was her sixth of the season, putting her into a tie with Kern for the team lead.
Syracuse broke up the shutout in the fourth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-1.
Stanford answered in the bottom of the fifth, with Dani Hayes sliding around a tag at home plate to score on a groundout from River Mahler. The RBI from Mahler was her 22nd of the year, and just one short of her career high.
Chung picked up the win in the circle, tossing four shutout innings to move to 7-1 on the season. Chung entered in relief of Houston in the fourth inning, and struck out three and allowed just one hit. Houston finished with just one run allowed on one hit in three innings of work.
The three-game series wraps up tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PT. Tickets are available at Tickets.GoStanford.com, and the game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
