Dugan Tosses Gem in Run-Rule Victory

Nick Dugan went the distance in an 11-1 run-rule victory over UC Davis on Monday

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Nick Dugan turned in a gem on Monday night, tossing seven innings and allowing just six hits, one run and no walks with four strikeouts to guide Stanford (20-17) to an 11-1 run-rule victory in seven innings over UC Davis (19-20).

Dugan faced the minimum in three of the seven frames, turning in the longest outing by a Stanford starter this season. The right-hander, who improved to 4-0 on the year, threw 55 of his 88 pitches for strikes and struck out two of the final four batters he faced in the game.

The only run allowed came in the fourth inning as Dugan got a ground ball up the middle with runners at the corners and one out, but Jimmy Nati’s attempted double-play turn was thrown wide at first and pulled Rintaro Sasaki off the bag.

The complete game was the first for a Cardinal pitcher since Quinn Mathews’ historic nine-inning performance vs. Texas in the 2023 Super Regional on June 11, 2023.

Stanford’s offense supported Dugan in a big way, tallying 11 runs on 14 hits – including seven extra-base hits. The run-rule victory was the third of the season for Stanford.

Nati and Brady Reynolds each finished a leg short of the cycle, with Nati going 3-for-4 with a run scored and six RBIs. His day started with a three-run homer in Stanford’s four-run first inning, continued with an RBI-single in the second, and concluded with a two-RBI double down the line in left field in the four-run fifth. The round-tripper was Nati’s 10th of the season.

Reynolds also went 3-for-4, managing a triple in the first, an RBI-single in the second and a solo home run in the fourth. The home run was Reynolds’ eighth of the year, while the triple was his second in as many games.

Temo Becerra, Sasaki and Cort MacDonald all finished with two hits – as MacDonald posted a pair of doubles.

Stanford will look to build on the Monday momentum this weekend when it welcomes Wake Forest to Sunken Diamond for a three-game ACC series beginning on Friday at 6:05 p.m.
