Balogh continues hot start with four goals and three assists

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – An early scoring eruption guided the No. 4 Cardinal past No. 19 UCSB this afternoon, as Stanford moves to 4-0 on the season. The Card tallied six first-period goals, and never looked back en route to a 16-7 win.

The Cardinal jumped out to an early advantage, with Botond Balogh scoring three goals in the first two minutes. Ryan Ohl added a goal as well to make it 4-0 before the Gauchos scored their first goal of the day. By the end of the first period, Stanford led 6-1.

Balogh and Ohl each added another goal in the second, with Max Zelikov, Gianpiero Di Martire and CJ Indart joining the list of scorers as well to make it a 9-2 lead at halftime.

In the third, Zelikov added a second goal to make it two-straight multi-goal games for the sophomore. Simone De Vecchis scored in the third and fourth to join Balogh (4), Ohl (3) and Zelikov as the game’s multi-goal scorers.

In three games played this season, Balogh has now tallied 12 goals and six assists to lead the team with 18 points. Zelikov trails him narrowly for the team lead, adding in a pair of assists to his tally today for 13 points on the season.

In the cage for just the first three quarters, West Temkin made eight saves and allowed just three goals. The senior All-American now boasts 21 saves and 26 goals allowed this season.

The Cardinal’s weekend continues on Sunday, taking on No. 13 UCSD in La Jolla. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, and starts at 12:00 p.m. PT.
