Opening Tournament in the Books

Godsick and Rivera reached the semifinals at the Battle in the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO – The fall tennis campaign opened with Battle in the Bay, hosted at California Tennis Club, with Nico Godsick and Hudson Rivera participating for the Cardinal.

In singles, both players went 1-1 and advanced to the round of 16. Godsick earned the first ranked singles win of his career, taking out Santa Barbara’s No. 121 Lucca Liu, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Rivera also posted a first round win, defeating Pepperdine’s David Fix in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0.

One of the top doubles tandems in the ACC a year ago, Godsick and Rivera went 2-1 in San Francisco, reaching the semifinals. First, they took out Illinois’ duo of Jilly and Miyoshi, 8-5, and then earned their first ranked win of the season over Georgia’s No. 84 pair of Chen and Giamichelle, 8-3.

Stanford returns to action Sept. 20 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the ITA All-American Championships.
