LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 Cardinal moved to 6-0 on the season with another dominant defensive showing, smothering No. 15 Santa Clara to win 19-7 at day one of the Overnght MPSF Invitational.
The Cardinal jumped out to the lead with a dominant first half, going ahead 6-3 in the first period before shutting out the Broncos in the second to go ahead 9-2 at the break.
Stanford poured it on in the third, scoring five goals and again holding Santa Clara scoreless to lead 13-3 heading into the fourth period.
Goalkeeper West Temkin kept his hot streak going, exiting the game after the third period after stopping five shots and allowing just three scores.
Santa Clara’s third goal of the day came with just under two minutes to go in the first, and didn’t score goal number four until just four minutes remained in the game. The Card has put together back-to-back defensive clinics, holding No. 13 UCSD to just four goals last weekend.
Stanford scored six more in the fourth to put the game on ice, closing out the 19-7 win.
Botond Balogh and Ben Forer led the way offensively, each posting hat tricks. Balogh dished out four assists as well to lead the Cardinal with seven points.
Max Zelikov, Alex Gheorghe and Orestis Zervoudakis each scored two, as the Cardinal ended with 12 different scorers.
The Card continues MPSF Invitational competition tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., taking on No. 7 Long Beach State. A win over Long Beach would have Stanford playing again at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the 8:00 a.m. game between No. 1 UCLA and No. 11 UC Davis.
A loss to Long Beach State would have the Cardinal taking on the loser of the UCLA/UC Davis game at 3:30 p.m.. All games will be streamed on Overnght and played at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center.
