GOLF, Ill. — She’s been one of the best in Stanford women’s golf history, and she finds herself representing Stanford well at Glen View. After the first two rounds of the Windy City Collegiate, hosted by Northwestern, Kelly Xu is tied atop the leaderboard, positioning herself well for a chance at her first collegiate win.
Entering Monday’s portion of stroke play, Xu ranks fourth in program history in scoring average (71.86) and lowered that mark after a strong opening 36 holes. She fired scores of 70 and 68 to reach 6-under through two rounds, sharing the clubhouse lead with Jeonghyu Lee of UCLA. Both rounds for Xu followed similar paths, and both rounds kept her inside the top five for the entirety of the day.
She was 1-over through five and then rattled off three birdies over her next seven holes to climb near the top of the leaderboard. A double bogey on 13 set her back a few strokes, but then she birdied on 15 and 17 to finish the first round strong. Her front nine during the second round was clean, including an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole, but she had consecutive bogeys on 11 and 12 that threatened her round. Again, she found something late in the round and birdied on 17 and 18 to close out the day with a 68 and a share of the lead.
Nora Sundberg had a fantastic turnaround from the morning to the afternoon session. She was just a few positions up from the bottom of the leaderboard after a 6-over 78 during her first 18 holes but then posted a 3-under 69 in the afternoon, one stroke shy of her collegiate best. In the morning, she had eight holes over par, but in the afternoon, she had just three, adding six birdies to the scorecard. Four of her six birdies in the second round came on the front nine, where she had just one birdie earlier in the day. Sundberg finds herself tied for 36th and in the middle of the pack.
The final round tees off at 5:30 am PT on Tuesday, as it did on Monday.
