Windy City Wraps Up

Kelly Xu holds onto a top 10 spot

GOLF, Ill. — The final round of the Windy City Collegiate took place on Tuesday morning at Glen View Club. Stanford women’s golf had a chance for an individual title after Kelly Xu was tied for the lead entering the final 18 holes of golf. Xu was strong on the front nine but couldn’t hold onto the top spot, settling for a top 10 finish while Nora Sundberg played well on her birthday to improve her place on the leaderboard.

Looking for her first collegiate win, Xu was in a great spot after the front nine. Of the leaders, she was the only one who teed off at 5:30 am PT, and she was 2-under through her first nine holes, moving her to 8-under for the week. After the turn, the round took a turn. Xu did not have a birdie on the back nine and went 4-over, a surprise considering how well she played on the back nine during the first two rounds on Monday.

Xu settled at 4-under for the tournament, finishing in a tie for sixth, her second top 10 finish to open her senior season.

Golfing on her birthday, Sundberg continued to climb the leaderboard after a rough first round. She shot a 3-under 69 in round two before finishing under par again on Tuesday with a 1-under 71. The back nine was more eventful than the front nine, where she recorded a par on every hole. She had three birdies and two bogeys over her final nine holes, including birdies on 13 and 15. Sundberg finishes the week 2-over, but moved from outside the top 50 to a share of 25th overall, thanks to finishing four strokes under par over her final 36 holes.

Stanford will reconvene as a team for the annual Stanford Intercollegiate, presented by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, on Oct. 17-19 at Stanford Golf Course.
