LOS ANGELES – Despite several quality chances that saw No. 1 Stanford play to a 21-6 advantage in shots, the Cardinal (6-1-0) suffered a 2-0 setback at the hands of No. 18 UCLA (4-2-0) on Sunday from Wallis Annenberg Stadium for its first loss of the season.
The Bruins made good on their first chance of the afternoon, claiming the early 1-0 lead on a goal from Bella Winn in the fifth minute.
With the Cardinal desperately searching for the equalizer in the second half, the Bruins doubled the lead in the 79th minute as Lexi Wright beat Stanford freshman goalkeeper Caroline Birkel to run the tally to 2-0.
Birkel was credited with two saves in the setback. Playing opposite Birkel in goal for UCLA, Daphne Nakfoor was outstanding, collecting nine saves to secure the shutout.
With the nonconference slate now complete, Stanford will turn its attention to ACC play next week when it travels to Clemson for a 3 p.m. PT kickoff on Thursday.
