Malone Wins World Gold

Brody Malone secured his second career World gold medal on high bar

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Stanford alum Brody Malone won a World title on high bar on Saturday evening, securing his second career World gold and third medal overall at the FIG Senior Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Malone turned in a 14.933 routine in the apparatus final to return to the top step of the podium, finishing ahead of Japan's Daiki Hashimoto (14.733) and Great Britain’s Joe Fraser (14.700). He becomes just the third American gymnast to win multiple World titles, previously earning high bar gold in 2022, as well as a bronze-medal effort in 2021.

The Summerville, Ga., native earned his spot in the apparatus final with a 14.166 score in the qualification round, finishing sixth in the event after Subdivision 4 and hanging onto his final berth throughout the remainder of the prelims.

Malone contributed to a historic World Championships for Team USA, joining Donnell Whittenburg (still rings) in becoming the first two U.S. gymnasts to win gold at the same World Championships since 1979. Patrick Hoopes also added a bronze medal on pommel horse, marking the first time three men on Team USA have won a medal at worlds since 2013.

Cardinal senior Asher Hong was originally slated to compete alongside Malone this week after winning his second career U.S. all-around title earlier this summer, but sustained an injury during qualification warmups and was forced to withdraw from competition.

Eddie Penev '13 was the third Cardinal gymnast to compete in the event, representing Bulgaria for his fourth World Championship appearance, appearing on floor exercise and vault in the qualification round.

Stanford returns to the international stage in less than two weeks, as Taylor Burkhart was selected by USA Gymnastics to compete in the Memorial Arthur Gander in Morges, Switzerland on November 5.
