Cardinal Downs Cal State LA in Exhibition

Stanford beats Golden Eagles 85-50 behind 20 points from Chloe Clardy

STANFORD, Calif. – Chloe Clardy led four Cardinal in double figures with a game-high 20 points and six rebounds, and Stanford beat Cal State LA in an exhibition on Wednesday night, 85-50.

Nunu Agara added 17 points and seven boards, Lara Somfai had a double-double with 13 and 10, and Hailee Swain chipped in 10.

Swain scored eight points in the first quarter and had a steal and fastbreak layup near the end of the period to put the Cardinal up 12, 18-6. The Golden Eagles got within nine on a couple of occasions early in the second and used a 6-0 run just before half to pull within 10, 35-25. Stanford answered with a 6-0 run of its own in the final 44 seconds of the first half on an Agara jumper and a pair of Clardy fastbreak layups off Cal State LA turnovers to go up 41-25 at the break.

Stanford dominated the third quarter, especially at the line. Agara had eight in the period and Somfai seven and the two were a combined 11-of-11 on free throws. Agara made six, Somfai five and Talana Lepolo made her two. Stanford went on a 9-0 run midway through the third to go up 54-29 which featured seven free throws and a Somfai layup that resulted in an and-1.

Alexandra Eschmeyer had eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, five rebounds and three assists, while Talana Lepolo scored seven and made her two field goals, including her only 3-point attempt.

Stanford shots 45.1 percent as a team (32-of-71) and was 18-of-19 at the line (.947), but just 3-of-18 on 3-pointers (.167). The Cardinal had 17 assists, 10 steals, outrebounded the Golden Eagles 60-30, and scored 50 points in the paint.

Stanford starts its regular season on Monday, Nov. 3 when it hosts UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
