Roush Named Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete

Roush is Stanford's honoree as chosen by the Military Bowl

WASHINGTON (November 10, 2025) – Stanford University tight end Sam Roush, a graduate student in computer science, has been named a Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete presented by Fognigma.

Roush, who is from Nashville, Tennessee, earned his undergraduate degree in computer science with a 3.8 grade-point average. Roush has been named to the ACC All-Academic Team and Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators. He also was named to the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year watch list.

Roush is now working toward a master’s degree in computer science and has focused his studies in artificial intelligence, finance and innovation in computer engineering.

Among the projects Roush has completed are:

  • Utilizing knowledge of Naïve Bayes and Logistic Regression ML models to predict outcome of football games.
  • Building basic GPT-2 LLM to do paraphrase detection and poem generation, and compete with classmates to maximize accuracy and training efficiency.
  • Generating 3-D model of Top Gun scene using computer graphics software Blender.
  • Designing an AI model to categorize images of football plays into their respective play type (run vs. pass and run type).
  • Constructing ‘Devils Advocate’ Discord chatbot to debate and argue with users.
  • Utilizing html and logic programming skills to create a workout generator and 1RM predictor in the form of a website.
  • Building college football recruiting tool to analyze transcripts, academically classify recruits, and actively scrape social media for recruit profiles with streamlined outreach process.

“Sam has been a tremendous representative of Stanford Athletics and Stanford Football for the entire Stanford community,” Stanford undergraduate advising director T.J. Burnett said. “He has been engaged in academic coursework, independent studies and internship opportunities. Beyond the classroom, he has been a fierce advocate for his student-athlete peers and the broader student experience at Stanford. He has held leadership positions on his team and is a key leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is excited to continue his master’s coursework in Computer Science with an emphasis on advanced computer science principles and approaches in artificial intelligence principles & techniques, mining data sets, and translational bioinformatics."

The Go Bowling Military Bowl is proud to recognize the members of the fifth annual Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program presented by Fognigma, honoring some of the brightest minds competing on the football field in the ACC and the American Conference.

“We are excited to once again present the Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program and celebrate the successes of these student-athletes on the field and in the classroom,” Military Bowl Foundation President & Executive Director Steve Beck said. “Along with our partners at Fognigma, we congratulate these young men for their achievements and look forward to their continued success.”

The Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program presented by Fognigma honors one football player at each university that is a member of the ACC and the American Conference – the two conferences that are represented in the Go Bowling Military Bowl college football game. These players are studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) subjects and/or aspire to STEM careers.

The two players whose teams compete in the 2025 Go Bowling Military Bowl will be recognized at the game, which takes place on Saturday, Dec. 27 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN. Bowl tickets are on sale now. A donation will be made by Fognigma in the name of these two players to their respective school’s general scholarship fund.

“Fognigma is honored to recognize these outstanding students pursuing STEM fields,” said Kayla Shemanski, Fognigma director of sales & marketing. “Their commitment to academic achievement and athletic discipline is a true example of hard work & determination."

Proceeds from the Bowl benefit Patriot Point, the Military Bowl Foundation’s retreat for wounded, ill and injured service members, their families and caregivers
