Sustained Academic Success Among GSR

Stanford Athletics registered 97 percent in the latest Graduation Success Rate

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford Athletics registered an overall graduation rate of 97 percent in the latest Graduation Success Rate, with 21 programs earning a 100 percent graduation rate.

Both the Graduation Success Rate, which reflects a rolling four-year average, and Federal Graduation Rates are based upon the percentage of student-athletes who earned a degree within six years of initial college enrollment. The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate to account for transfer student-athletes, mid-year enrollees and others not tracked by the Federal Graduation Rates. Stanford student-athletes have a Federal Graduation Rates four-class average of 94 percent.

This is the 14th straight year that Stanford's overall score has been at least 96. Stanford has never scored below 93.

Stanford's 10 men's programs achieving perfect GSR scores were: baseball, basketball, cross country/track and field, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball and water polo.

Stanford's 11 women's programs achieving perfect GSR scores were: basketball, beach volleyball, cross country/track and field, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.

Other programs checking in at 90 percent or higher were: women’s rowing (97), women’s swimming and diving (95), wrestling (94) and football (90).

The Graduation Success Rate is the NCAA's comprehensive calculation of student-athlete academic success. Unlike the federally mandated methodology, the NCAA rate includes incoming transfer students who graduate as well as students enrolling in the spring semester who receive athletic aid and graduate.

The less-inclusive Federal Graduation Rates is limited to individuals in the cohort who entered their freshmen year on athletic aid while also counting any individuals in the cohort that leave the institution as a non-graduate (including transfer students who may graduate elsewhere).

Seven years after overtaking UCLA as the nation's all-time leader in NCAA team championships, Stanford has won 137 overall, outdistancing its closest competitors in UCLA (124) and USC (115). The Cardinal owns 173 national team championships overall.

Stanford has captured at least one NCAA team championship for 49 consecutive seasons, a streak that dates back to the 1976-77 campaign. The Cardinal’s championship dominance and longevity is even more impressive when compared to its peers, with the country’s next longest active streak (7) belonging to North Carolina.

Stanford, which sponsors 36 varsity sports, produced six national team championships during the 2024-25 athletic campaign, claiming NCAA titles in women’s water polo and women’s rowing. The Cardinal added four other national team championships, with artistic swimming earning its first crown since 2021 while sailing closed its historic season as the women’s and coed squads combined to deliver three titles.

Stanford also maintained its streak of top-3 finishes in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, presented annually to the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic department. The Cardinal placed third overall, only 4.5 points behind Texas (1,255.25) and 2.75 points behind USC (1,253.75) in the closest margin of the award’s history. The Cardinal has won the trophy in 26 of the possible 31 seasons, including a 25-year streak from 1995-2019.

In the Capital One Cup race, Stanford finished second with 135 points behind North Carolina (140) in the women’s standings. The only school to deliver a season sweep of the men's and women's titles in the history of the Capital One Cup, Stanford is a three-time winner in the men's category and seven-time champion of the women's program, including four of the last eight years.
