STANFORD, Calif. - No. 12 Stanford men’s soccer saw its season come to an end Sunday evening, conceding in the 88th minute to fall 1-0 to Washington in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
"We feel sick," said Jeremy Gunn, the Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer. "We started the game emphatically. We were so far on top, but we simply just needed to finish our chances. We allowed them to regroup, and it only took one good chance to end the season."
Stanford opened the match on the front foot, outshooting the Huskies 14–2 and generating multiple quality chances in the opening 45 minutes.
The Cardinal appeared to have broken through in the 30th minute when Liam Doyle collected a rebound off a Palmer Bank shot and buried it into the back of the net. However, an offside call negated the goal after a lengthy review and the two sides remained level.
Stanford nearly scored again later in the frame, but another Doyle chance at the goal mouth was denied and the two teams entered halftime in a scoreless stalemate.
The Huskies found their footing in the second half, leading to a more competitive second stage in which both sides traded attacks.
With intensity mounting in the closing stages of the half, Washington found its goal with less than three minutes remaining, as Charlie Kosakoff flicked a header beyond a diving Rowan Schnebly.
Stanford scrambled to find a late equalizer, but the final horn sounded and time would expire on the 2025 campaign.
The Cardinal finishes with a 14-4-3 record, ending its season in the third round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship in the program's 23rd postseason appearance all-time.
