STANFORD, Calif. – Nunu Agara scored 19 points, Lara Somfai grabbed 18 rebounds and Stanford wrapped up its nonconference schedule with an 82-50 victory over Cornell on Sunday afternoon.
Agara led a quartet of Cardinal (12-2) in double figures. Courtney Ogden had 15, Hailee Swain 12 and Shay Ijiwoye a career-high 12. Somfai just missed another double-double. She had nine points to go with her 18 boards.
Stanford was up 17 after a 29-point first quarter, its best-scoring period of the season. Ijiwoye had nine on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting in six first-quarter minutes.
The Big Red won the second quarter, 14-11, but the Cardinal put up 28 in a dominant third, which included an early 9-0 run punctuated by an Ogden 3-pointer. Ogden scored 10 in the third on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting as part of her 15-point afternoon. She also added five rebounds and four assists.
Carly Amborn hit her first 3-pointer in the fourth before rimming out her first career miss after a 7-of-7 start from behind the arc. Nora Ezike collected her first career bucket with 2:02 left, a fastbreak layup off a feed from Stavi Papadaki.
Stanford’s defense hounded Cornell and racked up 17 steals, its most since tallying the same number at Washington State on Jan. 2, 2022. Agara, Ogden, Swain and Ijiwoye each had three. The Cardinal scored 56 points in the paint and had a 24-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Somfai’s 18 rebounds are the most for a Stanford freshman since Kaylee Johnson had 22 against Santa Clara on Dec. 14, 2014. They are also tied for the most in a single game by any freshman in the country this season (against DI opponents). San Diego’s Ayla Williams had 18 against Utah State on Dec. 7.
Stanford heads into the teeth of its ACC schedule with a 12-2 record and two losses by a combined seven points. The Cardinal makes its first cross-country trip this week, beginning with a game at NC State on Thursday, Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. PT.
