Cardinal Tops Tritons

Stanford begins 2026 with a win over UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. — No. 9 Stanford men’s swimming returned to the pool for the first time in 2026, taking on UC San Diego in dual action on Friday in La Jolla. The Cardinal began the new year on the right foot with a strong showing, sweeping the Tritons to the tune of a 177-81 final.

Stanford won every event against UC San Diego, taking care of business in short order in the first leg of their SoCal swing. There were 14 events on the schedule on Friday afternoon: 12 individual and two relays.

The afternoon began with the 200 medley relay, where the Cardinal finished with a time of 1:25.71. Ethan Harrington, Zhier Fan, Jonathan Tan, and Rafael Gu led wire-to-wire over UC San Diego’s A-team, which set the tone for a dominant day.

Omer Wiener picked up two individual wins on Friday. His first came in the 200 free with a time of 1:34.95, and then he added his second win in the 200 back with a 1:43.55, his first time competing in the event at the collegiate level. Wiener was also the anchor of Stanford’s 200 free relay to close out the day.

Henry McFadden won twice for the Cardinal, with wins in the 200 fly (1:43.82) and 100 fly (47.27). It was the first time McFadden did the 100 fly since the Triple Distance meet against California, where he set a personal best (47.25).

Henry Morrissey was the first individual winner of the day for Stanford, claiming the top spot in the 1000 free with a time of 9:03.91, a season best. His win was followed by Finn Harland, who snagged the top spot over teammate Josh Zuchowski in the 100 back with a time of 47.47.

A few Cardinal had sizable wins on Friday. Daniel Li won the 100 breast by nearly three seconds with a time of 52.74. Andres Dupont Cabrera cleared the field by over four seconds in the 500 free with a mark of 4:26.34. In the 400 IM, Ray Liu was the final individual winner for the Card with a time of 3:48.08, over five seconds better than freshman Connor Jones. Go Nagaoka competed against two Tritons in the 200 breast and won by over nine seconds with a time of 1:54.25.

Additional winners for Stanford came in the 50 free (Gu – 19.46), 100 free (Tan – 43.50), and 200 free relay (Harrington, Gu, Dupont Cabrera, and Wiener – 1:18.98).
