Wolfpack Edges Cardinal

Nico Provo won in overtime over the defending national champion, but No. 13 Stanford came up just short against No. 6 NC State, 21-20, Friday, in Maples Pavilion.

STANFORD, Calif. - Nico Provo won in overtime over the defending national champion, but No. 13 Stanford came up just short against No. 6 NC State, 21-20, Friday, in Maples Pavilion.

The dual came down to bonus points as NC State (10-3, 2-0 ACC) and Stanford (3-5, 1-1 ACC) each won five bouts.

Provo’s win at 125 pounds over top-ranked Vincent Robinson gave the Cardinal a chance to win the dual with one bout remaining. No. 7 Tyler Knox defeated No. 33 Troy Hohman, 6-3, at 133 pounds but was unable to register bonus points as the Wolfpack held on for the win.

Provo, a redshirt junior ranked No. 13 nationally, scored a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in overtime to notch the highest-ranked win of his career. He improves to 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in duals.

No. 10 Daniel Cardenas started the scoring for the Cardinal with a dominating 21-5 technical fall in 5:37 over Brogan Tucker and 157 pounds. It was the third straight technical fall for the redshirt junior, who is now 10-3 on the season. Seven of his 10 wins have been technical falls, while nine of 10 have come by bonus points.

Abraham Wojcikiewicz came from behind to defeat Don Cates, 8-5, at 184 pounds. It was the second consecutive win and 10th of the season for the redshirt sophomore.

No. 19 Angelo Posada followed up with a first-period fall over No. 27 Patrick Brophy at 197 pounds. It was the fourth fall of the season for the true freshman - the most by a Cardinal wrestler this season.

Up next, Stanford continues ACC competition, traveling to No. 15 Virginia Tech (Jan. 23) and Virginia (Jan. 24).
