BLACKSBURG, Va. - No. 22 Stanford fell 22-14 to No. 12 Virginia Tech in its first ACC road dual of the season, Friday, in Cassell Coliseum.
Stanford (3-6, 1-2 ACC) won four of the 10 bouts against Virginia Tech (7-2, 2-0 ACC), including a pair of major decisions from Daniel Cardenas and Angelo Posada.
Trailing 7-0, redshirt freshman Jack Consiglio, ranked No. 18 nationally at 141 pounds, registered the first team points for the Cardinal with a 6-5 decision over No. 22 Tom Crook. Consiglio registered a reversal to start the third which proved to be the difference in the bout. He moves to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in duals.
Cardenas cut the team score to 10-7 with an 11-2 major decision over No. 16 Ethen Miller at 157 pounds. Ranked 10th in the country, the redshirt junior notched three takedowns, an escape and the riding time point in his 10th bonus-point win of the season. He improves to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in duals.
Redshirt sophomore Abraham Wojcikiewicz, ranked No. 33 at 184 pounds, scored a late takedown to defeat No. 31 Jaden Bullock, 6-4, and keep the Cardinal within reach, 16-10, with two bouts remaining. Wojcikiewicz is now 11-9 overall.
Posada, who is ranked No. 17 nationally, gave Stanford a chance with a 13-4 major decision over No. 15 Sonny Sasso at 197 pounds. It is the highest-ranked win for the true freshman, who improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in duals.
Stanford is back in action on Saturday at Virginia. The dual is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT on ACCNX.
