No. 9 Stanford Tops No. 20 California in Thrilling Dual Meet

No. 9 Cardinal secures its third straight conference victory, highlighted by standout performances from Anna Roberts and Sienna Robinson

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 9 Stanford captured its third conference dual victory in its last three meets Friday night, besting No. 20 California, 196.975-196.825, inside Maples Pavilion.

The victory over the Golden Bears marked the Cardinal’s first dual-meet win over its Bay Area rival since the 2014 season (March 3, 2014).

Senior Anna Roberts won the all-around competition for the third consecutive meet, highlighted by her beam title-winning score of 9.950 and second-place finishes on vault (9.875) and bars (9.925). Junior Sienna Robinson won bars with a new career-best score of 9.950.

Stanford kicked off its pink and alumnae meet with a season-best vault rotation, posting a 49.200 team total led by a 9.875 from anchor Roberts. Freshman Summer Gronski posted a new career-best score of 9.850 in the third spot, while sophomore Ui Soma matched her career-best score of 9.850 in the fourth position. Senior Taralyn Nguyen added a 9.800 in the fifth spot, while freshman Ana Bărbosu hit a 9.825 in the second spot of the lineup.

After the first rotation, California held a 49.250-49.200 lead.

The Cardinal kept its season-best rotations going with a 49.450 on bars, led by a new career-best mark from Robinson. Roberts followed with a 9.925, while Bărbosu posted a career-best-tying 9.875 in the fifth spot. Ui Soma anchored with a 9.900, and Stanford’s one-two punch of Jung-Ruivivar and senior Ava Sorrento opened the rotation with matching scores of 9.800.

Stanford secured its first lead of the night halfway through the meet, 98.650-98.525.

In the third rotation, the Cardinal’s beam lineup posted a 49.025, even with two athletes recording falls. Roberts led the way with a career-best 9.950 in the fifth spot of the lineup, and Robinson posted her second 9.925 score of the night in the third slot. Junior Temple Landry and senior Claire Dean each posted scores of 9.875, while Bărbosu’s 9.400 in the anchor position was Stanford’s final counted score.

California regained the lead after three rotations, 147.700-147.675.

Stanford secured the victory with an impressive final floor rotation, posting a 49.300 led by 9.875 scores from Nguyen and Bărbosu. Jung-Ruivivar, Robinson, and sophomore Alana Walker added the other three scoring marks, each earning a score of 9.850.

The Cardinal takes on its fourth conference dual meet of the year next week, welcoming Pitt to The Farm Friday, Feb. 6. The matchup between Stanford and the Panthers is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
