IRVINE, Calif. – Theo Snoey tied for a match-high 16 kills, but No. 16 Stanford dropped a 25-27, 25-23, 20-25, 13-25 decision to No. 5 UC Irvine, Friday, at the Bren Events Center.
Stanford (1-5) was held to .183 hitting, while UC Irvine (8-0) posted a .333 clip. The Anteaters out blocked the Cardinal, 12.0 to 8.5, held a 58-42 advantage in kills and a 6-5 edge in aces.
Snoey tied his season-high in kills on .314 hitting to go with an ace, a dig and a block. Opposite Moses Wagner added nine kills, seven digs and four blocks. The senior also recorded three aces – the most by a Cardinal player this season.
Senior Theoren Brouillette controlled the offense with 27 assists to go with six digs, two blocks, an ace and a kill. Sophomores Evan Porter and Kai Schmitt split time at libero, collecting seven and six digs, respectively.
Outside hitter Alex Rottman totaled six kills, five digs, three assists and two blocks. Sophomore middle blockers Kaumana Carreira and Reed Waintright turned in identical offensive numbers, tallying four kills on 10 swings with just one error for a .300 attack percentage. Carreira posted three blocks, while Wainwright had two.
UC Irvine was led by William D’Arcy, who recorded 16 kills, eight digs, five blocks and an ace. Cameron Kosty, the son of Stanford head coach John Kosty, ran the offense for the Anteaters, notching 39 assists to go with seven digs, three kills, two aces and a block.
Stanford and UC Irvine meet again on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
