Record-Setting Win in Tucson

Revuelta wins her third collegiate tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. — It’s hard to envision a better start to the spring season than what top-ranked Stanford women’s golf showed at the Arizona Thunderbird Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Arizona. The Cardinal led wire-to-wire and was the only team to finish under par, cruising to its third stroke-play win this season, while also featuring the third different individual winner in its lineup this year.

Every tournament, it seems Stanford approaches another record, and that was no different after the final round on Tuesday. Stanford beat No. 21 Baylor by 35 strokes, tying the program record for largest margin of victory in a tournament, which occurred first at the 2022 Gunrock Invitational. As a team, Stanford finished 16-under (848), thanks to a 11-under in the final round. No team in the field shot under par as a team in any round except for the Cardinal, who also went 5-under in the second round.

There was little doubt that Andrea Revuelta would wrap up her third collegiate win on Tuesday. She entered the final round with a five-stroke lead over teammate Paula Martín Sampedro, and while that lead closed by one stroke, it was not nearly enough. Revuelta closed off the tournament with a 2-under 70, finishing at 11-under for the tournament with a 205.

Martín Sampedro had pulled within two strokes on the back nine, but Revuelta knocked down an eagle putt on the par-5 13th hole to distance herself from her teammate. For the week, she recorded 13 birdies and that eagle late in the third round.

With her win, Revuelta joins an exclusive group of Stanford golfers. She is the ninth in program history to win three career tournaments, joining current teammate Megha Ganne on that list. Of those nine, she is the sixth to win three before the end of her sophomore season, joining Kathleen McCarthy, Mariah Stackhouse, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang, and Rachel Heck.

Had it not been for Revuelta’s first round, Martín Sampedro might have snagged her third career win. The junior shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, closing out the week 7-under (209). She was nearly flawless in her pursuit of Revuelta in the final round, with just one bogey on the card and four birdies, including a clean front nine. It’s the second time this season Martín Sampedro has finished second (Stanford Intercollegiate) and is the 18th top-10 finish of her career.

The biggest charge of the day came from Meja Örtengren, who made a bevy of adjustments in advance of the final round. It paid off, as the sophomore from Sweden shot a 5-under 67, the lowest round in the field on Tuesday. She was nearly clean as well, with five birdies, including three on her first five holes of the day, and an eagle on 13. After finishing even through 36, Örtengren ends in fourth at 5-under (211), thanks to her 15th career round in the 60s. In just her second season, 37.5% of her rounds have been under 70 (15 of 40).

Anna Song earned the first top-5 finish of her career, tying for fifth at 3-under (213). She used her first sub-70 round at the collegiate level to get there, shooting a 69 on Tuesday, with just one blemish on the scorecard, which came on her first hole. She rebounded quickly, with four birdies over the next seven holes to race her way up the leaderboard. The freshman from Los Angeles, inserted into the lineup for the first time this season, made a strong case to stay there.

The Cardinal are off next week but resume action on Feb. 23-24 at the Bruin Wave Invitational, hosted by UCLA.
